I'm sorry, it will be my last anonymous posting here. Just speaking of my personal experience: the knee usually hurts because there is a bruising and fluids inside the kneecap. They will go away and should not cause a problem. Now, a ligament can tear under silly circumstances (you don't have to be an athlete). After the swelling will subside you might feel absolutely normal again, but a ligament can be nevertheless gone. So see a doctor anyway -- and you can wait for a swelling to disappear -- it makes a diagnosis simpler.
